Fiat Cinquecento – it’s all about passion

A new version of the Cinquecento, which means 500 in Italian, will be launched this year, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the model’s launch.

The small rounded car became a symbol of Italy’s post-war economic situation and mass motorisation.  Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi once said that many of them had kissed their first girls in a Cinquecento.  In Milan the people not only love the little car, they are truly passionate about it.  Almost like a VW Golf in South Africa…

The car business was neglected by the family who controls Fiat with a 30 percent stake, as they were too focused on diversifying the company.  As a result, Fiat lost about €7.9-billion in four years up to 2004.  The company dropped from number one to number seven on Europe’s largest automaker list.

In 2005 the Grande Punto was launched, which helped the company on its feet again, selling 305 000 units in nine months.  To keep this growth going, Fiat needs its new models to be profitable.  It aims to sell 120 000 new Cinquecento a year.

A website was designed on which users could propose design ideas for the interior of the car, including colours and other gadgets.  Input was used and the new Fiat 500 will finally be launched this year.

The new Fiat will be bigger and more powerful than its predecessor and Fiat fans can look forward to the new Fiat 500 making its appearance this year.
