Volkswagen to bring back the folla?
There is a growing demand for a budget-friendly car that is reliable and, well, kinda cool too. So there have been talks that Volkswagen might bring back the rear-engined range that will fit everyone’s pocket.
Though it will not be a folla, but is will be a small car that features a water-cooled engine set over the rear axle and will have a nose-mounted radiator.
The two models that will be reinforced, is the Jetta and the Beetle. Pricing will range between R70 000 and R98 000. The Jetta will be a compact four-door car while the Beetle will be just as tiny as always.
Optional extras include satellite navigation, ABS and a sunroof, but no power steering is available. Volkswagen is likely to include some sort of stability control.
One or two-cylinder engines will be available to emerging markets and a turbocharged three-cylinder unit with direct fuel injection will be on offer to the rest.
Martin Winterkorn, current company chairman, believes that this is the ideal solution to the problem for people who simply cannot afford new cars but there are some safety and stability concerns that may hamper the likelihood of it ever reaching production. Which will be very sad indeed.
