Volkswagen R32 – You Will Definitely Want One
Volkswagen’s Citi Golf has been re-invented several times in the past 25 years, but the new R32 is something totally different – and you’ll definitely want one.
It is the first Citi Golf that is categorised as a performance car. It produces 90kW at 5900rpm, five more that the original. It will cost R115 920, which is claimed to be the most affordable performance car in the country, and later this year, 100 lucky South Africans will be able to take this baby home. Yes, unfortunately, only 100 Citi R-lines will be sold in SA – best to go get your name on a list at your nearest VW dealer.
With a slightly lower suspension, double exhausts and new 15”, six-spoked alloy rims, the rest still looks pretty much the same. But it has quite a few new luxuries on the inside, such as a front-loading CD/MP3 player with four speakers, a transponder immobiliser, child-proof door locks, remote-controlled central locking and an alarm. It also comes with front bucket seats, a three-spoked steering wheel with aluminium trim, silver dials, vents and sills as well as silver foot pedals.
It can reach about 190km/h and when you reach 6000rpm, you will only hear the engine – it makes a lot of noise which your neighbours might not approve of. It doesn’t have power steering and there is no anti-lock system.
So the R-line is a great start for youngsters who cannot afford cars of R200 000 and above, but also wants a performance car with some cool extras.
