Volkswagen Golf R32 – complimenting the GTI
Only 200 units of the Volkswagen Golf R32 will be delivered in South Africa for the time being, which means that very few drivers will get to experience the Golf GTI’s sibling’s performance.
The new R32’s nose is all-aluminium compared to the redlined back grille found on the GTI. Bi-xenon headlamps are fitted as standard behind darkened headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted. Blue brake calipers and two centrally mounted tailpipes set the R32 aside from the rest.
The V6 engine develops 184 kW at 6300rpm and 320 Nm at 2500 rpm. Extremely high levels of grip are achieved thanks to the Haldex clutch’s capability to transfer as much power to the rear as necessary. South Africa will only see the R32 as a five-door vehicle with a 6-speed DSG.
The Golf R32 will achieve a top speed or 248 km/h and can go from 0 – 100km/h in 6.2 seconds.
At R344 000 the R32 is said to get some serious competition from the Audi S3 and A3 3.2 Quattros.
40 percent of new Golfs sold in South Africa to date in 2007 were GTIs. Volkswagen South Africa says the R32 is for a driver that “knows”. There is a waiting list for any more than the 200 units to be imported.
