The new Volvo C30: Short and Super-sexy

The new Volvo C30 Sport Coupe is launched in South Africa and with its tail 22cm shorter than the S40, its still a super sexy car.

Volvo is so confident about the new model, their target is to sell 1500 vehicles in SA by the end of the year. That’s a hell of a lot taken into account that the world target is 65 000 a year from its plant in Ghent in Belgium.  And with competitors like the VW Golf GTi, Audi’s A3 and BMW’s 1 Series, they’ve got a lot to prove in the next 12 months.

Volvo Car SA’s sales manager, Fred van Niekerk believes that the C30 has attributes to achieve iconic status and will make a big impact on the local market.  And this might be possible.  The new C30 is very sexy and the six speed T5 can reach a top speed of 240km/h and a claimed 0 – 100km in 6.7 seconds.  Impressive.  The two-litre comes without the speedy performance and can reach 210km/h and 0 – 100km in 9.4 seconds.  It will cost you R50 000 less though.

The two-litre also doesn’t have the roof spoiler, retractable external mirrors, puddle lights, power-adjustable driver’s seat and manual height adjustment for the front passenger seat, dynamic stability and traction control, high-performance audio system or leather-faced seats of the T5.  That figures where they put the extra R50 000.

Crash bags for crash-protection comes standard as with all larger Volvo’s and to absorb and channel the energy from a head-on collision, the C30 is fitted various grades of steel through the front structure.  Full-length curtain bags, side impact and whiplash protection are also included.

The C30 is 22cm shorter than the S40 Sedan, only compromising on boot space.  The rear seats can fold flat and there should be more than enough travelling space.  Especially since this car is a “child-free” vehicle.  It’s a sporty car with high speed performance and is more suitable for young singles, couples or some of the older folk with still a lot of spunk.

A wide variety of upholstery, cabin finish inlays, pedals, gear shifters and steering wheels are available.  There are also eight variations of wheel-rim design, body kits in contrasting or body-colour finishes, three sound-system choices.  This is almost like a “create-your-own” kind of thing. No surprise that South Africans will be able to choose out of 14 colours.  Sweet.
