The new Touareg – it’s not only skin-deep

Although the new Touareg is a beauty to look at, Volkswagen SA says the changes are not only on the outside.  Increased safety features make this vehicle one of the safest on the roads.

Obviously you recognise the new front of the Touareg.  The headlights look a lot like the Passat’s and the bumper has bigger air intakes.  The rear has new taillights with a more contemporary circular design and a revised boot spoiler.  The Touareg will now also be available in a total of thirteen exterior colours.

Safety upgrades include a roll-over sensor that prepares the safety belt pretension and side airbags, should a roll-over situation occur.  Another safety feature is the FrontScan brake distance reduction system. This system senses any reduction in the speed of a vehicle in front of the Touareg and offers an optic warning to the driver and then reduces the brake pad-to-disc gap to increase braking response time.  Clever huh?

Trendline models now feature new headlights, a revised front-end design and a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels.  Interior changes include a steel finish dashboard and trim inserts, an MP3 compatible RCD-300 radio and as optional extras a touch-screen sat-nav system, bi-Xenon headlamps and ParkScan park assistance.

Apart from the safety and cosmetic changes, the Touareg will retain the existing engines, but the R5 manual model will no longer be available.

Prices range from R473 800 for the Touareg 2.5 R5 Tdi to a whopping R742 400 for the Touareg 5.0 V10 Tdi.  I guess safety doesn’t come cheap.  And neither does luxury.
