New Fiesta, new name
According to a UK publication, Business Car, a source at Ford disclosed that the Fiesta name is likely to change when the eighth-generation Fiesta is launched in a year’s time.
The Fiesta badge made its debut in 1976 when the car was first launched in Europe. Since then, more than 10 million units have been built and only three years after its launch, the millionth unit rolled off the production lines. Fiesta has been very popular in Europe and South Africa.
Apparently the new car is totally different than the current Fiesta, and thus the debate about the name change. Four names that are under consideration are Cuga, Isis, Phoenix and Genesis.
Fiesta is a well-known, successful name and the company’s global product vice-president, Richard Parry-Jones said that a lot of equity with badges are built up which provides understanding and appreciation for brand name values. He also said that studies have indicated that this should not be thrown away lightly.
Some believe that a new name for a new start is a good idea and that the target market for these cars are the somewhat younger generation – some that weren’t even born when the name was launched. We will have to wait and see what the final decision is about the name of the new Fiesta when a concept version of the car will make an appearance at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September this year.
