Mazda6 MPS: Very, very impressive
The new Mazda6 MPS is turbocharged, has a 2.3-litre engine and can reach 100km/h in 6.6 seconds. With its six-speed gearbox, its top speed is 240km/h, making you want to hold on to your seat as it revs up.
In 2002, the Mazda6 MPS (Mazda Performance Series) Concept was first shown at the Paris Motor Show and engineers then spent a couple of years shaping up the body and increasing the brake performance. With its first vehicles on sale in May 2005, Mazda expects it to compete against Audi and BMW’s 3 Series.
With flared wheel archers filled with 18” alloys and chromed exhaust pipes the Mazda6 is really good to look at too. The look is luxurious but, in its own way, mean and powerful.
The interior is very luxurious too, with leather seats and titanium-look fascia. Power windows and mirrors, cruise control, front, side and head crash bags and anti-lock brakes as well as switchable dynamic stability control, are some of the features of the MPS that the conventional Mazda6 lacks.
The DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) 2.3 MZR engine with Hitachi single-scroll turbocharger and air-to-air intercooler produces a claimed 191kWat 5500rpm and 380Nm at 3000rpm.
At R319 990, including a three-year or 100 000km warranty and five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan, the Mazda6 MPS surely is very, very impressive.
