Honda Civic crowned car of the year
From October 2005 to October 2006, eligible cars were put to the test for South Africa’s car of the year, and Honda’s Civic 1.8VXI sedan drove away with the title.
Cars were tested on highways, cities, dirt roads and track driving and out of eight competitors, it was the Civic that made the contestants bite the dust. Contestants included the Ford Focus ST, Hyundai Accent 1.6 GLS HS, Alfa Romeo 159 2.2 JTS, Renault Clio 1.6, Opel Astra GTC and the Toyota Avensis 2.2 D-4D Exclusive.
Since 1986, the Car of the Year Award was won by Toyota twice, Opel three times, BMW five times and Audi three times. What makes this competition so unique and quite fair, is the fact that cars are rated in their specific segment and not against each other. Cars are physically tested and voted for by SA Guild of Motoring Journalists members and the competition is said to promote the winner in a way that excites the whole market.
In comparison to the Coty competition, the SA Car of the Year the focus is on excellence in its class rather than automotive excellence where the car is evaluated in categories including value for money, dynamics, safety and technology.
The Car of the Year should show that it is worthy of its title and set benchmarks for its market segment.
