Great sedans for under R80 000

Chinese automaker Geely and South African private equity group TJM Holdings has entered a joint venture to import cars from China to SA.

During 2007, Geely SA will import about 3000 CK-1 sedan vehicles which will be sold throughout SA through a network of dealers.  In future the more upmarket 1.6-litre MK and 1.8-litre FC sedans will also be imported and sold locally.

Geely is the largest private automaker in China and has representatives in North America, Russia, Europe and south-east Asia.  Geely SA feels that there is a gap in the South African car market for quality, affordable sedans.  A gap that they are eager to fill.

With prices starting at R79 995, South Africa will have access to four variants sedans with engines ranging from 1.3 to 1.6 litres in the CK-1s.  These sedans will be built at the company’s plant in China and imported to SA.

With the stamp of approval from SABS, anti-lock brakes and electronic brake pressure distribution, these sedans are not in the least less safe than its South African counterparts.  It also has two front crash bags and three-point seat belts for all five seats.  The top-of-the-range models have some luxury touches, which include power windows, remote-controlled door locking, air-conditioning and leather seats.

Future plans for this company includes setting up an assembly plant in South Africa to supply cars to Australia, Europe and the US.
