Fiat 500 reaches half a century
In Turin, Italy, Fiat’s 500 minicar will be launched in July 2007, 50 years after the launch of the first Fiat 500.
Even though the new Fiat 500 will be available to the European market directly after the launch this year, South Africans will have to wait till early next year for the new Fiat to be driven into our showrooms.
This very small new hatchback will be built in Poland and will be available to the European market in three engines, the first being a 55kW, 1.3-litre Multijet turbodiesel and two petrol engines, a 52kW 1.2-litre eight-valve and a 75kW 1.4-litre 16-valve, each driving through either a five or six-speed manual gearbox.
The new 500 has three doors and is only 3.55m long and 1.65m wide. It is not known which engines will be available to the South African market, but let’s hope we also get the choice that the European market is getting.
