Corsa SUV on its way
GM’s European division has confirmed that they will launch a mini SUV based on the fourth-generation Opel Corsa, currently on sale in Europe. And it will be no sissy.
With a raised ride height, a front skid plate and chunky bumpers; it will definitely look the part. Apparently it will compete against the Fiat Sedici and Suzuki SX4 and GM officials are confident that this model will generate 120 000 sales world wide.
This SUV that shares a lot of its looks with the Corsa hatch will be built at GM’s Antwerp plant in Belgium and it is planned to be launched at a major motor show by late 2009.
The engine is expected to consist of low capacity turbocharged units derived from the Corsa’s existing powerplants and revised versions of the company’s 1.3 and 1.7-litre CDTI turbodiesels. It is not known which four-wheel drive system will be used yet but it is likely that a type of hybrid technology will be used.
GM aims to have the fourth-generation Corsa in South Africa by the end of this year and because the SUV will be the first fully imported Corsa model on the market, GMSA will have to carefully decide which European spec models will be best suited to the South African market.
