BMW M3 comes with plenty of power

The 252kW 3.2-litre engine will be replaced by a new, more powerful V8 when BMW launches its new M3.

According to BMW, the engine is one of the lightest V8s in series production at only 202kg.  It revs to 8300rmp and gives 309kW, which is above the average to define a high performance engine.  The four-litre, 90˚ Vee is 15kg lighter than the straight six that it is replacing and the new engine is expected in SA early next year.

Another new feature is the variable cam timing mechanism using a “stepper” motor that controls the camshafts using normal engine oil pressure rather than a special high-pressure oil supply, fed by two volume-controlled oil pumps in a semi-dry double sump.  The aluminium/silicon alloy block is cast in the same foundry as BMW’s F1 engines and cylinders are honed to expose hard silicon crystals and the iron-coated aluminium pistons run directly in the bores.

To obviate even that minuscule power loss, the engine’s computer disconnects the alternator under acceleration and uses its drag to increase engine braking on the overrun.  The stainless-steel exhaust system is made of thin-walled tubing by high-pressure forming.
