BMW 335i convertible: take it off!

In addition to BMW's 3 Series coupe, a convertible has arrived.  BMW now has two 3 Series coupes, as the new BMW 335i SE convertible comes with a metal roof.  Why? Because it's more durable and vandal proof.

Of all the coupe-cabriolets (CC), this one is the most convincingly coupe-like of all the CC's.  The tail is short and low with none of the big features that so often ruins the look of a CC.

With the roof closed, the boot is 50 litres bigger than the previous model's and the roof can be opened from the outside by holding down the 'unlock'Â? button on the ignition key.  The transformation takes about 22 seconds.  The metal roof makes the new model weigh about 55kg over the old one.

The new 335i costs about R540 000, but it is worth it because it has one of the world's greatest engines, combining a diesel engine's ability to pull effortlessly from low speeds, with the usual six-cylinder BMW petrol engine's smoothness and high-revs energy.

It can reach 100km/h in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.  It also passes the test of low-noise driving with flying colours.  The roof seals well which means that it is not very noisy and it feels like driving in a coupe when the roof is closed.
