Audi’s S-cars: a glimpse into the future
The new Audi S6 and S8 sedans are hard to tell apart, but take a closer look….
The S8 is bigger and has a wider front and the running lights are hidden it its normal light clusters. The S6 has a row of five “running lights”across the top of each of its two lower air intakes. With 5.2-litre V10 engines, derived from the same unit that powers the Lamborghini Gallardo, these super-performance cars will set you back a few bucks. The S6 starts at R806 500 and the S8 at R979 000.
Optional ceramic brakes may be added at an additional R99 000 and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with pop-up speakers is also optional for R60 000.
Compared to BMW’s 760i at R1 089 500 and BMW’s S63 AMG at R1 260 000, the Audi S8 is not all that expensive. Plus it comes with all-wheel drive and Tiptronic six-speed auto/manual gearbox and paddles behind the steering wheel for comfortable, fast gearchanges.
Both the S8 and S6 are electronically limited to 250km/h and they can reach 100km.h in 5.1 seconds and 5.2 seconds respectively. Torque is 540Nm.
With power-adjustable sports seats, the S6 gives the sporty feel as soon as you get behind the wheel. An S logo on the steering wheel welcomes you , standing out on the three-spoked, multifunction leather sports steering wheel with a special stitch. A 9cm colour display with an additional digital speedometer features on the driving info system. The multimedia interface plays on an 18cm colour screen that pops up from the top of the fascia and includes controls for the 10 speakers and the CD changer that sits in the glove box.
The S6 is fitted with two full-size front crash bags, side bags for the front seats and large curtain side bags. Side bags for the rear seats are an optional extra.
Apart from hosting a larger cabin and bigger seats, the S8’s interior is much the same as the S6. The S8 also has static turning lights and dynamic cornering lights. Both of these models are top of its class and should be considered stiff competition for cars in the same price range.
