Kawasaki launches a mean machine

The new Kawasaki KLX450R is a motocross bike ready for any action.  It is off-road, enduro-ready, high-performance bike and it is powerful.  Very powerful.

This mean machine has an electric starter and five-speed transmission.  The titanium exhaust valves have been replaced by steel to improve durability and are 1mm smaller to increase torque.  The light intake valves are unchanged.

The rear shock absorber has dual compression adjustability for high and low-speed damping and brake pads are kept clean from mud and dust by wavy petal brake discs front and rear.  This also improves braking.

Access to the air-filter has been improved through the left side and side vents of the motocross version have been omitted to keep water out.

The plastic fuel tank helps keep the bike light and it is said to be the lightest, fastest and most powerful off-road racer yet to be launched by Kawasaki.  It takes 8 litres of fuel and the trimmings include a speedometer, two trip-meters, an odometer and a clock.

The KX has a right engine guard only while the KLX has left and right engine guards, an aluminium bash-plate and a side stand.  The latter weighs in at 115kg – 10kg more than the KX – and costs R6000 more than the KX, which costs R53 995.

When this mean machine was tested by Dirt Rider magazine’s journalist, it was said to be the best trip around the desert ever.
