BWM’s little big bike

The new compact motorcycle from BMW should not be underestimated.  The G650 X is a lightweight bike for adventure bikers and weighs less than 150kg.

Each one of the three versions available in SA has the same single-cylinder, quad-valve Rotax engine as the F650 GS and delivers 39kW at 7000rpm and 60Nm of torque at 5250rpm.

The steel and aluminium tubular frame and aluminium swing arms are standard on all models, and so is the 9.5-litre fuel tank that sits under the seat.  Each also has adjustable upside-down front forks, a five-speed gearbox and chain drive.

These bikes come without windscreens and the instrument panel consists only of a speedo, a clock and two drip-distance recorders.

The G650 Xcountry is selling for R70 600 and is the most versatile of all models.  It is capable on tar and dirt and shocks can be adjusted to change saddle height.

The Xmoto is a street version with firm suspension and strong brakes.  It costs R75 500.

The Xchallenge – costing R70 600 – is for off-roading and is the lightest at 144kg.  It has height-adjustable rear air suspension.

So don’t let the Dinky-toy size of BMW’s new bike fool you, this little big bike can take you anywhere.
