Land Cruiser gets a makeover

The one-ton Land Cruiser Pick-up is still one of the most reliable, durable 4x4s around, and now it got a fresh look too.  In addition to the styling changes, a number of functional and convenience features have been added.

The heavy-duty 4x4 got a more contemporary look that allows new generation styling and the new wraparound headlights that incorporate turn indicators soften the look of the virtually indestructible vehicle.  The front track is increased by 80mm and the bonnet, grille, front bumper and mudguards are all revised.

Functional changes include the increase in fuel capacity of both petrol and diesel models to a total of 180 litres.  Twin tanks carry the fuel, each with a capacity of 90 litres.

Another change – or rather improvement – is that the front and rear differentials incorporate differential locks with electronic selection of either rear differential lock or front and rear lock.

The automatic locking front hubs makes it possible to change to four-wheel drive without the need to stop and lock the hubs – making the transition so much more convenient.

The power steering has been revised to provide a better feel, especially at low speeds.  The spare wheel is now mounted behind the driver in the load box with a lockable guard frame.

Air conditioning, key operated central locking and a digital clock are some of the luxuries added to the big monster of 4x4s.

The diesel engine comes with a 4.2-litre 1HZ engine that develops 96 kW at 3800rpm and 285 Nm of torque at 2200rpm.  The petrol engine comes with a 4.5-litre 1FZ-FE 6-cylinder engine.  It delivers 162 kW at 4600rpm and 384 Nm of torque is available at 3600rpm.
