Freelander 2 passes the test

The Land Rover Freelander 2 is powerful and impresses on any surface.  No wonder Land Rover puts so much emphasis on the Freelander 2’s off-road capability.

There are two engine options – the one being a 3.2-litre in-line six cylinder delivering 171kW and 317Nm of torque, and the other a 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 118kW and 400Nm of torque.  Fuel consumption is a claimed 11.2 liter/100km for the in-line six and 7.5 litre/100km fro the TD4.

In a few months’ time and automatic gearbox will be introduced for the diesel engine, which is at this stage only available with a six-speed manual gearbox.  The six-cylinder is only available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The different models available are the S, SE and flagship HSE.  Land Rover has indicated that a base-spec E variant, fitted with the TD4 engine, could be launched before the end of the year.  This model will not feature the patented Terrain Response off-road system that is standard on the other models.

The Freelander 2 is designed for all terrains and when going from tarred to gravel roads, the Freelander hardly notices it.  Special features for this purpose include Hill Descent and Gradient Release Control, as well as Roll Stability Control.

It also comes with a lot more space, which adds to the comfortability and luxury of this stylish SUV.

Prices range from R349 000 for the 3.2 petrol i6 S automatic to R419 000 for the 2.2 diesel HSE manual.
