Dial Direct Responds to Increase in 4x4 Sales

Whether you use them to traverse the dirt roads of rural regions, or to navigate the mountainous speed bumps in the suburbs, there is no doubt that South Africans love their 4x4s. If merely counting the number of 4x4s on South African roads isn’t enough to convince you of this country’s love of these motorised behemoths, then the following statistics from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa will definitely give you some food for thought.

Last year alone, 53 400 4x4s were sold in South Africa with Toyota selling the highest number of units (roughly 15 000), followed by Landrover (roughly 4 500). Compare this figure to the number of 4x4s sold in 2004 (36 500) and 2005 (45 700) and it becomes clear that not only do South Africans love their 4x4s, but that love is steadily increasing with each passing year.

In the months of January and February this year, the number of 4x4s sold has already reached 9 150. The next question that follows is, how has the short-term insurance industry responded to this new found surge of four wheel drive adoration?

According to Anthea Abrahams, director of Dial Direct Insurance: “Not only are 4X4s safe, practical and spacious, they and the contents of 4X4s are also eye candy for criminals. With this in mind, we have designed insurance cover that is specially tailored for 4X4 owners. Our 4X4 insurance cover includes, for example, insurance for 4X4 accessories to the value of R10 000, free towing and storage if the 4X4 is damaged, R5000 towards medical expenses if the 4X4 vehicle’s occupants are injured, cellphone car kit cover, cover for loss of keys or reprogramming of the anti-theft device system, cover in a wide variety of popular 4X4 destinations outside South Africa, spare wheel cover and free installation of a tracking device as part of the policy.”

Abrahams notes that to date, Dial Direct’s 4X4 insurance cover has been very well received and attributes its success to the supply and demand philosophy. “We are always on the lookout for new, innovative insurance products and our 4X4 cover definitely responds to changing trends and purchasing habits,” concludes Abrahams.
